August 2008 Dr. Aboada has moved to Canada, so PM is now served only by the Centro Salud (M-F, 8-8), near the Artesanas Mercado, and Dr. René Mandujano Barrios, a G.P. doctor in the colonia (998-842-7336). Both speak less English than we’d like. However, PM has its own ambulance, which makes any emergency trip to the hospital much quicker. You gotta think of these things when you’re away from home — as well as if you call PM home! Lastly, the dollar is in the pits (9.75 in the bank) and we blame Bush, the worst President to ever get selected.
July 2008 “What a long strange trip it’s been...” We crossed the border in Pharr, Texas, driving our dependable old Subaru Legacy wagon from New Jersey down to Puerto Morelos via the Gulf Route. The trip covered eleven states in the US and a total of 3,959 miles (6,371 kms). Bodo’s Restaurant has the same chef but a new name, El Coyote (maybe); Bodo has left town for parts unknown. Triny’s Tacos has moved into the Blue Marlin’s old slot on the square but other than that, things change slowly in PM.
March 2008 Traveler’s checks are no longer accepted at the money exchange booths in Puerto Morelos. It’s blamed on changing banking rules and without a bank in town, cash is king. Use the ATM in front of the supermarket (3,000 pesos) or up at the highway crossroad (4,000 pesos) to withdraw your daily limit. The money exchange near the supermarket will soon be the last one in town, they take cash only.
February 2008 It’s been a wonderful high season in town, with absolutely beautiful weather. Some of the guests of the all-inclusive resorts that shoulder PM to the north and south have discovered the charms of our little village and have enjoyed our funky restaurants instead of their boring buffets. Many are re-thinking their next vacation to stay ala-carte in Puerto Morelos. How about you?
December 2007 Happy Holidays to all. And congratulations to the Cancun’s Premier Division soccer team, Atlante. They won the National Championship by beating the perennial powerhouse, UNAM Pumas, 2-1 in Cancun in the final of a home-and-away series. The first game ended in a tie in Mexico City, 0-0. David Lau, the former chef at Hola Asia, has taken over the former Portobello Italian restaurant on the square and re-named it after himself, ala John Gray. For old times sake, Valerie is his head waitress! And our tropical garden at the Blue Monkey is a kaleidoscope of color, please stop by for a peek.
October 2007 This month it’s been two years since Hurricane Wilma. Puerto Morelos and the northern half of Quintana Roo State dodged two strong hurricanes this season that went further south, so we’ve been very lucky again. The beach is back and things are gearing up for the high season. We’re looking forward to hosting old friends and making new ones. Not to mention bragging about how good the Blue Monkey looks. If you’re in town, check us out!
August 2007 For those that live here part-time or know Puerto Morelos well, the Ojo de Agua Hotel has blocked off part of the sand street that runs in front of the hotel and they’ve opened a large parking lot next to Villas Latinas. Also the tall electrical towers in the colonia are coming down soon, replaced by underground lines. And for us soccer fans, the first division team, Atlante Iron Horses, have moved from Mexico City to a new 20,000 seat stadium just down the road from Costco (Av. Kabah) in Cancún. They won their first game, 2-0, against Pumas!
July 2007 HELP SAVE PUERTO MORELOS
We need your help. A new development plan is being created for Pto. Morelos by the municipal government of Cancun, which could mean changing zoning and land usage to accommodate mega construction, high rises, destruction of part of the reef for cruise ships, and filling in the mangrove.
Please take a minute to remember why you love PM and then write an email to help preserve its integrity. Let the authorities know why you come to Pto Morelos on vacation or why you live here.
Let them know it is important to keep development low density, that’s what gives PM its charm.
Our eco-system is delicate and overdevelopment would do irreversible damage.
We do NOT want high rises here. It would obstruct the flow of air and ruin the appearance of our small town.
Pto Morelos already has an important tourist market. People stay here who want a different, more authentic experience than Playa del Carmen or Cancun.

July 2007. The Blue Monkey is looking more like a home as we are pushing to get it ready to rent for 1 September. We will be in residence in Puerto Morelos until the middle of September and have a ton of details to take care of. Come by for a look or better yet, reserve an apartment now!
May 2007. We’re happy to have a new breakfast and lunch place on Av. Rojo Gomez, opposite Playasol and the new Tortugas condos in back of Amar Inn. It’d called Las Morenas (the Brunettes), named after its attractive female owners. It offers tasty fare including bagels and croissants.
